I want to join

Become a member

You can join us at the beginning of each semester. The first 3 rehearsals in each semester are open to everyone without any obligation, just to have a look. If you write us a little message in advance, we can send you some further information.

In this semester rehearsals take place from 19.00 at Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena (assembly hall; Carl-Zeiss-Promenade, Building 2; from the bus stop "Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule" approx. 400m).

The next dates to join are:

·     April 2021

The audition for everybody to join will be from 18-21 at August-Bebel-Straße 4, seminar room 104 on the following dates:

·         TBA

·         TBA

Who can join?

Every person of student age can participate. We are students, doctoral candidates and young working people from Jena, Weimar, Erfurt and the surrounding area. You do not have to study psychology or even study at all.

We start rehearsals one week before the start of the first lecture week and give our concerts at the end of the semester, so that we cover the rehearsal periods April to July and October to February. During the semester break there are often other exciting projects.

All rehearsals are held in German, as is the mail traffic. The songs however are very international.

  • every Wednesday from 19:00 to 21:30 (lecture period)
  • at August-Bebel-Strasse 4 (Google Maps) (this semester at Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule, Carl-Zeiß-Promenade 2, Haus 4, assembly hall)
  • seminar room: 104

In addition, there is a rehearsal weekend every semester (May and November), a rehearsal Sunday and once a month an additional Friday rehearsal.

What skills should I bring?

Above all, you need to be able to enjoy and share the joy of purposeful and goal-oriented work with others.

Every semester we work out a new and high-quality concert programme with great dedication and time commitment. In addition to the joy of single-minded rehearsal work, you need perseverance, reliability and personal responsibility, as you help shape the end result with us. It is therefore very important to us that you are up for a challenge and are willing to give the choir a high priority. It requires a great deal of willingness in terms of time. In return you are part of a great community that strengthens and supports each other and experiences great things.

Since each member rehearses the pieces at home with the help of Teach-me files before the rehearsal, independence and willingness to learn are important prerequisites.

You don't necessarily have to have a lot of previous choral experience, but of course vocal confidence and the ability to teach yourself the pieces - whether with the practice files or with an instrument of yours - are a basic requirement. You will definitely enjoy your time with us and grow in more fields than you may think.

To become a member of the Psycho-Choir, an audition takes place at the beginning of the semester. After a short conversation to get to know each other, the audition consists of the following parts:

1) short singing exercises to determine your vocal range and the sound of your voice

2) a solo verse of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (you sing, we accompany you on the piano)

3) a song prepared at home, which we sing with you

4) If you like, you can also sing us a short song (genre of your choice) a cappella to show us your skills.

You can download the song to be prepared and all information about it here. (To open the file you need a zip program like WinZip, 7-Zip etc., which you can get for free on numerous websites). If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us.

Good luck, you can do it!

Choir Community

It is important to us that everyone sees themselves as part of the team and identifies with the community. Therefore we go for a drink after every rehearsal and have a weekly choir breakfast together. In addition, there are regular activities such as barbecues or excursions and all sorts of other things to get to know each other better and feel comfortable.

Basically you should participate in all rehearsals. Of course, it can happen that you get sick or that you cannot attend a rehearsal for important reasons agreed upon beforehand. But you should take a close look at the rehearsal schedule at the beginning of the semester and consider whether you can realize the rehearsals and be there for all concerts at the end of the semester. If you miss too often, you will unfortunately not be able to sing at the concerts.

At the end of each semester we give several big concerts in Jena and the surrounding area of Thuringia. In addition, there are often other projects during the semester and the semester break. Furthermore we are also involved in international projects and travel abroad.

Rehearsal Weekend

Once each semester we all travel to Bad Sulza (May and November) to rehearse intensively for a whole weekend. Participation in the choir weekend is of course obligatory, as intensive preparation for our performances is required. Together we have the opportunity to spend a lot of time together there in order to get to know each other even better. All costs for accommodation are already included in the membership fee. This weekend is very important for the musical and social development and is a lot of fun for everyone involved.

What does the membership cost?

To cover all running costs, there is a membership fee of 60€ per semester for students (and 80€ for working people or anyone who can afford it). This contribution already includes all costs for the rehearsal weekend as well as other costs (e.g. travel expenses to concert venues etc.). If the amount of the contribution for whatever reason is a challenge for you, contact us and we will find a solution.

I have children

Great! :-)

You are always welcome to bring your kids to the rehearsal or take them to the rehearsal weekend. Your kids should not be a reason for you to be unable to sing with us.

We are looking forward to meeting you!
